Obsessed…the LBD

Loving a little black dress!  Dressed up or down, this silhouette is flirty, fresh and totally work appropriate, (with pockets!) yet pretty enough for date night.

Throw on some stand out accessories and the look is instantly elevated.  Like this sleek fitness tracker that doesn't LOOK like a fitness tracker, keeping you on your fitness goals while looking chic.  Genius, and a great deal on this week's Access Hollywood's #MyStyleFinds.

Or my latest obsession, these statement earrings from Deepa Gurnani, which add interest to the dress, or to a cute, clean top.  A worthy accessory investment!  Deepa is an NYC-based Indian American designer, whom I met when I was sourcing Oscar accessories, and her stuff is gorgeous!

Oscars Backstage: It’s a wrap!

Dress by Thai Nguyen Atelier

Jewelry by Ash + Ames

Alexander McQueen clutch from MyHabit

The biggest red carpet in the world.  Dozens of interviews.  Six and a half hours on air.  Four inch heels.  One STUNNING dress.  Hosting the Academy's #OscarsBackstage this year was a blast!

It was a mad race to prepare for this event, late-night cramming on nominees and presenters, watching everything I possibly could and of course, dressing for the most high profile red carpet of the year, but it all came together seamlessly and I am very proud of the work that we did.

Interviewing 9-time Academy Award nominee, Diane Warren.
Hitting the red carpet with my co-host, Orlando Jones

My co-host Orlando Jones was an absolute delight to work with, and put me at ease with his quick wit, intelligence, and enthusiasm. We felt so much in sync, we even ended up wearing matching looks in mixed metallics without even planning it.

Speaking of outfits, I feel so lucky to have worn Thai Nguyen Atelier's gorgeous hand-beaded gown!  He is about to break through big time and on a night where diversity was the hot button topic, it was important to me to represent an Asian American designer, especially one who feels like family.  Let me explain.  When I was 19, my first job as a back up dancer was for a Vietnamese variety show, kind of like the MTV of the Vietnamese community.  Thai designed costumes for the show, and has since translated his mad skills into opening his own atelier and dressing stars for the red carpet.   Aside from his being the most stunning dresses I tried on, it just felt good and right, to support a fellow journeyman who's now hitting his stride, to use this huge platform to turn the spotlight on someone's work that is exceptional, original and impeccably crafted.  If Jennifer Lopez wears him on American Idol and Kelly Osbourne, Jeannie Mai and Tracee Ellis Ross all chose him for Oscar night, clearly, I'm not alone.

Screenshot 2016-02-29 09.20.41

From being a 19 year old back up dancer, to walking one of the biggest red carpets of the year, it's more than just a pinch-me moment.  To see myself on an Oscar best-dressed list?   Completely surreal.  It's icing on the cake to be mentioned on Jezebel's list of least boring Oscar looks.

But the best part of all, was seeing my sister, who coincidentally works for the Academy, bring my 10-year-old niece down the red carpet and smile and wave to Auntie Di.   That was truly priceless.

Palm Springs Modernism

Pool

Palm Springs + Modern Design= happy place.  I'd long heard of Modernism Week (happening now through February 21st) and finally made my first trip there for opening weekend.   Sunny and 80 degrees, it was the perfect weather for being a looky-loo in some of the coolest and most iconic mid-century modern homes in the city.  We signed up for the Signature Home Tour, and it was worth every penny, even if just to pretend for a moment that this was my pool.

I seriously need to up my succulent game.

What my living room could look like with terrazzo floors and no children.  On a good day.

Drooling over Platner dining chairs....

...and a shower that gives mine an inferiority complex.  #showergoals

My kind of garage.

As fun as it is to peek inside this lifestyle, covet it, and daydream about living in homes like these someday, this was the perfect reminder to ground myself in love for the life I've built for myself...and my vintage Eames dining chairs from ebay.  Life is good.  Thanks Palm Springs Modernism!

OSCARS 2016!

Thrilled doesn't even begin to describe how excited I am to be hosting The Oscars Backstage!  Walking the red carpet,  interviewing the stars, exclusive backstage access during the broadcast, I'll be sharing it all with you... and millions of viewers on Oscar.com, as the Academy's Official second screen experience.   And lest we forget the controversy of the night, it will be more than a little interesting to see how the show addresses this year's lack of diversity in nominees.  The backstage team is certainly diverse though, as I am co-hosting with actor & comedian Orlando Jones.  #OscarsBackstageNotSoWhite   🙂  Stay tuned...

Of course, after saying, "How cool!" everyone's next question is "What are you going to wear?"  Understandably, it is not unlike attending the fashion Olympics, so I'm enlisting a little help here.  My dear friend, stylist Sam Saboura, is navigating me through the world of Oscar fashion, but in the meantime, I'm exploring what kind of dress, er, GOWN I even like.  I asked him if I could wear Free People.  He laughed.   Can't help it, I'm a boho girl at heart.  Here we go, let the gown games begin!

First dress I tried, this bright pink Roland Mouret.  Loving  the seams and color. Amazing construction.  Still feels like me.

Am I an Herve Leger girl?  Never thought so, but this gorgeous peacock color and detail around the neck are sure to look great on camera.

I love the deep plunge and the beading is so pretty on this Alice and Olivia.  It feels fresh and modern and not trying too hard, which is exactly how I want to look, but Sam thinks you see the dress first, and me second.  🙁  Never good to be upstaged by your dress.

Not sure about how this will read on camera, but I'm LOVING this boho-esque Alice and Olivia dress.  Unconventional, comfortable (!) and totally me.  But, it does need a strong accessory game and a killer shoe to make it red carpet ready.  Maybe a coral lip and beachy waves...will have to marinate on this one.

Which one is your favorite so far?

More updates to come as the hunt for the dress continues...

Freebie Friday

Thanks everyone for last week's #FreebieFriday turnout!  It's such a blast giving goodies away and watching women pay it forward, thank you for joining me in practicing generosity.  You guys rock!

This week- who likes CASHMERE?  While it feels far from winter in LA, this #FreebieFriday will take the chill out of the season for you AND a friend.

Speaking of friends, you know you've got a good one when you ask, "Hey after lunch would you mind being a beanie model with me in the parking lot?" and she doesn't even blink an eye.  Thanks Steph!!   I am blessed to have an amazing tribe of women in LA that I met when we were professional dancers, and we support one another unconditionally in all our endeavors, beanie modeling and beyond.   Steph is an amazing actor, producer, dancer, mother and former Miss Georgia, thank you very much!

She's helping me give away 2 Portolano 100% cashmere beanies which retail for $125 and $130.  One textured honeycomb in ivory and one classic ribbed in red.  They are soft, luxurious and warm and my favorite go-to on a not-so-great hair day.

Share this Valentine's weekend with someone special and I'm not talking about your man!   Send a little love to your tribe, your BFF, your rock, let her know you're thinking of her even in all the busyness of our daily lives.   Head over to my Instagram, like the pic and tag a friend you want to share the #FreebieFriday with!  Tag as many friends as you like and make sure you are following me.  Winner will be picked at random on Monday and it could be you and your bestie!

I hope you guys laugh as much as we do!

Special thanks to MyHabit for providing this week's #FreebieFriday goodies, to Stephanie Michels for being America's Next Top Beanie Model, and to Laurie for snapping the pics.  It takes a village, or in our case, a tribe.  Love you.

Spring has sprung?

It's February in LA and 90 degrees!  I was just getting used to my Uggs and puffy jacket, and now it feels like the middle of summer.   Let's just go with it.  Nothing wrong with busting out the springtime palette, right?

A tweedy pink shift dress with crisp white accents, rose gold watch, and peony lips, make me feel like spring is definitely in the air- taking me from work to dinner all without a sweater!  (But for the record, let's just hope that El Nino makes its much-anticipated return soon.)

Freebie Friday

The right sunglasses can make your entire look, upping the cool factor exponentially.

TGIFF!  It's #FreebieFriday peeps!  This week, I'm giving away TWO pairs of Covry Sunglasses.  One for you and one for a friend- c'mon the whole reason I started #FreebieFriday here was to pass good fortune along, so why not share the wealth?   Covry sunglasses feature an "elevated fit" which means they are perfect for faces with lower nose bridges and higher cheekbones (hello, my Asian sisters and brothers) but anyone can wear them comfortably.  They just sit a touch higher from your face, which is a good thing.

One winner will receive the White Lynx frames with pink lenses, shown above, AND the Vega with mirrored lenses in blue.  You can see how the Vega looks in black below or in my last post.  Each retails for $95.

To enter, follow me on Instagram, like the #FreebieFriday picture and leave a comment tagging a friend you'd like to share your new sunnies with.  Leave as many comments as you like, and this week's winner will be notified by Monday.   Thanks!

Dress: Red Valentino

Lipstick: Treat Collection

*Covry Sunglasses were given gratis, but opinions expressed are all my own.

Ladylike Chic

IMG_5818

I was born in the wrong era.  I love 60's silhouettes, and this swingy little sheath from Red Valentino reminds me of everything I love about mod fashion.  Clean, crisp and ladylike, this combo is made modern with a bright yellow satchel, (consider yellow a neutral- just trust me), mirrored sunglasses and a bright orange lip.

Add in pearl accessories, a rose gold watch, and I am ready for lunchtime cocktails.  You know, just to be period appropriate...;-)

Can you guess what item in this post I'll be giving away this #FreebieFriday?   If you're new to #FreebieFriday,  I'm giving away goodies from my style closet to my loyal fans, followers and friends.  Stay tuned for more details and you could have something from this post land right at your doorstep.

Freebie Friday!

LightStim

In my building my practice of generosity, every Friday, I'm giving away one item from my style closet to YOU- completely free!   This is the good stuff I want to share with my friends, fans and followers, and I will ship right to your door.  It's my little way of saying thank you for following and supporting my crazy adventures, some of you for years!  I am truly grateful and humbled by your support and encouragement.

To win the #FreebieFriday giveaway, follow me on Instagram, and tag at least 2 friends you think might be interested.   A winner will be picked at random by Monday.  Super simple!

This week, we're starting off with a bang...er, glow?  I'm a huge fan of non-invasive beauty, especially when it delivers results.  I love chemical-free, paraben-free, natural ways to stave off wrinkles and keep my skin looking fresh.  When I first met the folks at LightStim, I was skeptical...  Really, keeping this light on my face will increase collagen production and improve my wrinkles?  But then I tried it... and it works!  I've noticed a difference in my laugh lines and my skin looks radiant, clear and plumper, all without Botox, or chemicals.  There's good reason every high end spa has an LED light therapy facial on their menu.  It is FDA approved and has no contraindications.

I'm shipping a LightStim for Wrinkles, including serum and travel case, (valued at $250) to one lucky winner of the my first #FreebieFriday.  Good Luck! 🙂

Tough Chic

IMG_4361

I love dressing up for work, whether playing a fashionista, reporter, minivan mom, globe trotting creative or whatever the day has in store for me.  It's fun morphing characters through clothes, but truth be told, when I'm "off duty" this is how I really dress.  Distressed graphic tee, aviators, gold jewelry, skinny jeans and boots.  My uniform.

IMG_4380

It makes me feel powerful, sexy and cool.  And when combined with my DIY faux-bob, look out... Mama's got her swag on.

IMG_4367

As much as I enjoy getting girly with the best of 'em, deep down, I'm really just a wannabe bad-ass rocker chick.  Whitesnake, anyone?
