ERICA, LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA & THE ROCK

All Erica Chase-Salerno asked was to be a fly on the wall at my Moana interviews with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Dwayne The Rock Johnson- but she got much more than that!  Her story, energy and gratitude reminded me that there are a LOT of good people in this world eager to help each other out, and my faith in humanity was lifted just by being around her.  She kept thanking me throughout the day, but all I could think was, "No, thank YOU." Erica- your light is undeniable and thank you so much for sharing it with us. E-Strong, baby!

Take a peek at her experience.

Thank you Fandango, Walt Disney Animation Studios Moana!

GUILT-FREE SHOPPING!!!

Nothing beats looking good while doing good.  That's why my favorite charity event of the year is Shop For Success benefiting Dress for Success, an organization that provides clothing and professional training to help women in need.   It's going to be an epic weekend of designer deals.  Who's with me?

Adventures in Microneedling

You wanna what?  Wait.  Needles in my face?  WHAAAAAT?  No way.  Ever.  Not happening.

That was my initial reaction when I first heard about micro needling, a treatment currently all the rage in aesthetic skin care.

Micro needling uses very thin needles to create micro channels (tiny holes) in the skin.  The process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produces collagen and elastin.

The theory here is that the micro channels deliver hylauranic acid deep below the epidermis.  It claims to improve collagen production by stimulating the dermis well below where products can reach topically.  But really, does it have to be needles?

I am a big fan of non-invasive beauty treatments, have yet to try facial injections, and have no foreseeable plan to start.  I had seen a micro needling treatment once and had added it to the column titled:  "Things I Will Never Do", right along with diving with sharks and refusing to hire professional movers.   Besides, it looked painful and there was blood.

Then I had the opportunity to try micro needling at the highest recommendation of an actor friend who's skin is luminous, ageless and not in that frozen, plastic Hollywood way.  She introduced me to Image Body Spa, a new med spa in West Hollywood.  After some research, a little (okay, a lot of) hand-holding, and a tiny bit of needle anxiety, I decided to give it a go.   After all, I'm a huge fan of acupuncture, so needles aren't all bad...

Diane Mizota starting the microneedling treatment

Imee, the owner, allayed my fears and explained the whole process. My face is cleansed and numbed with a numbing cream. She is used a combo of plant-based stem cells and hylauronic acid in my treatment, which is applied with a dermapen, a machine that controls the depth the needles will permeate the skin. We begin. I can't feel a thing. I feel a tiny buzz around my face, but no pain. She uses the lightest setting of the machine.

There's some light redness immediately after, but no discomfort at all. The next day, my face feels a little dry and tight, but Imee assures me that is normal and that the results get better over time. I let my skin breathe all weekend and do an exfoliating scrub 4 days after. My skin is glowing, smooth and firm.

Two weeks later, I follow up with a Diamond and Oxygen facial, with paraffin on my hands and feet and I'm in heaven.  My skin has never felt smoother and I can see the results of the micro needling.  My fine lines seem less pronounced and my favorite UMA Oils and vitamin C serum seem to be working better.

Four weeks later, my skin is smooth, fine lines seem reduced and my skin looks plumper and glowier. (Is that even a word?) I definitely see the cumulative result of the treatment. It's a facial that I'd be more than happy to invest in once or twice a year- especially to keep my skin in tip top shape without resorting to more invasive procedures.

Would you try micro needling?

The best part about getting older is giving myself permission to invest in classic, quality pieces, that still look interesting, fresh and not like I shop exclusively off the J.Crew sale rack.  (not that there's anything wrong with that.  It can be a very comforting place.)  When I find pieces that give a lot of bang for my buck, I spend a little more, because damn it, I've earned it.

Enter Ripley Rader.  A local LA designer, whose take on style matches mine: streamlined with a little bit of sex appeal, and a whole lot of figure flattering.  Her high-waisted pants are leg-lengthening, middle-whittling wonders.  The proportions of her separates and dresses are flattering on many different body types and body-conscious without leaving you feeling like you're naked wearing sausage casing, they hug the right places and skim, ahem...others.

Like this red batwing dress.  Fitted, but still covered thanks to the draped sleeves.  When I recently wore this on Access Hollywood, producers, stylists, executives- everyone stopped me and had to know whose dress I was wearing.

This black wide leg catsuit is a stylish alternative to the LBD, and super sleek when paired with a simple gold belt.

A grey jumpsuit takes me from soccer snack mom with adidas to girls' night out when paired with open toe booties.  The jersey she uses is substantial, soft, and most of all, comfortable.  It's like getting dressed up, but feeling like you're still in your jammies.  Genius.

Green Beauty Overhaul!

I'm embarrassed to be finally throwing out makeup older than my child. (seriously, how gross is that, he's 9!) But VERY excited to be refreshing my makeup routine with pretty, high performing organic and non-toxic  basics from Citrine Beauty.

Jane Iredale Daytime Eyeshadow Kit
Silky, natural colors perfect for everyday, but easy to smoke up and go for more dramatic looks, this palette is a daily workhorse.

Antonym Baked Blush in Peach
Obsessed with this blush!  The perfect peach with warm undertones of gold and pink, I'll be wearing this blush year-round, plus the bamboo compact is so ec0-chic.

Per-fekt Lash Perfection Gel
Don't think a green mascara can rival your Great Lash or Voluminous?  Think again.  This gel makes my skimpy lashes long and lush and is a snap to remove.

Ilia Lip gloss in The Butterfly and I

The perfect daytime gloss gives a dewy, sexy pout, is non-drying and non-toxic.  Happy dance!  Who wants all those gross chemicals on their lips?

Ilia Concealer in Dandelion C3

Great coverage in a light formulation, this works great on well-moisturized skin with or without foundation.  I'm loving it on bare skin for my "no makeup" days.

More green beauty finds coming soon...

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Summer

Here's the breakdown of what made the cut, for reference only, I've linked to stuff still in stores.

For an upcoming 2 week trip to Japan, I challenged myself to pack the leanest wardrobe I could.   Here were my requirements:

  1.  Everything must feel as comfy as pajamas, but not LOOK like pajamas.
  2.  Footwear must not hurt.  Ever.
  3.  Machine-washable
  4.  Everything mixes and matches, with options for a dressed-up dinner, comfy plane/train ride and touring in hot, humid weather.

Here's the breakdown of what made the cut, for reference only, I've linked to stuff still in stores.

TOPS

  • Grey viscose t-shirt: Urban Outfitters
  • Checked button-up: Madewell
  • Yellow floral cold shoulder top:  Plenty by Tracy Reese
  • Tan silk tank: Zara
  • White boho tank: Free People
  • Khaki cotton jacket:  J.Crew

An assortment of tops that can dress up or down, I'll just have to be careful when slurping ramen in silk, which I have learned the hard way.

BOTTOMS

  • Green joggers:  Anthropologie
  • Green long shorts: (can't read the label, it's been washed off)
  • Green midi-skirt: Madewell

All three of these are favorites and I purposely chose bottoms all the same color so getting dressed will only be a question of shorts, pants or skirt?

SHOES

  • Tan suede walking sandal: Ecco
  • brown slip-on sandal:  Born
  • White sneakers: Adidas

With all the sightseeing, my body would be so grumpy with anything that isn't a functional walking shoe, so I bit the bullet and went in search of the "comfort sandal".  When I read the reviews, finding most are by women in their 60's on summer sandals, I knew I found the right section.  (Are we there already?)  Once I sifted through a whole lot of ugly, surprisingly, I found 2 not horrible, very comfortable options.  This trip: comfort trumps vanity.

ACCESSORIES

  • long gold pendant: H&M
  • short chevron necklace: Coachellove
  • gold stud earrings: Madewell
  • rose gold watch: Invicta
  • 2 thin gold bangles: Banana Republic
  • White-rimmed sunglasses:  Rayban Clubmaster via Luxottica
  • Aviators:  Mosley Tribes
  • Panama Hat:  Cuyana

Necklaces, alone or layered always add a polished component to any outfit, plus all the jewelry here is super inexpensive and not a loss if it gets misplaced.  Stylish sunglasses are a MUST, as is a chunky watch to elevate the tourist uniform of shorts and a tee.

Of course, throw in essentials and toiletries, 1 workout outfit and I'm good to go.  With Air BnB stays, laundry will be easily accessible, and this lightens my load to make room for the camera gear I'm bringing for some next level family vacation videos.   Priorities.  😉

Simple, chic and functional enough to hold your summer adventure essentials, this Cuyana Crossbody Pouch gives a refreshing pop of color to any ensemble, plus the strap also detaches for use as a clutch or makeup bag.  I wear mine with cutoffs and a white flowy top or my favorite striped sundress.  Can't wait to take it to Japan this summer...

No matter the season, I am obsessed with Uma Oils. Their Ultimate Brightening Face Oil is the one product I never, ever swap out of my routine.  In summer, when sun exposure and risk of brown spots are at an all-time high, this organic, hand-crafted,  oil keeps my complexion looking radiant and clear, plus it smells like heaven.  A luxurious necessity

IPL hair removal at home?  No way.  YES WAY.  I love that Luma RX is not painful, messy, time-consuming or laden with chemicals, but simply put, a VERY effective way to permanently remove unwanted hair.  I was doubtful at first, but after they gifted me the Mini and showed me how to use it,  I'm heading into my 1st summer free of waxing, shaving or razor burn.  The technology works best on darker hair colors, and is FDA cleared for areas south of your eyebrows.

Want to kick start your summer style?  I'm giving one lucky reader their own Luma RX Mini, valued at $379!  Just leave a comment below sharing what you love most about summer and a winner will be picked at random.   Good luck!

Girls’ Night Out!

Group of women around table with food

I feel so lucky to have women in my life who inspire and encourage me, make me laugh and support me through thick and thin.  As time goes by, I value time spent with girlfriends more than ever.

When my pal Romy Schorr of Romy Raves invited me to a girls' night out cooking class at HipCooks in downtown LA, sponsored by The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc, I couldn't resist the chance to spend some QT with a stellar group of ladies.

Like my blog crush, Sarah James of Whoorl, from whom I steal green beauty and style inspiration all the time, and who just happened to be in town!  Yay!

After braving rush hour to the LA downtown arts district, we started the night catching up, an intimate group of influencers, tasting The Crossings' crisp, fruity Sauvignon Blanc.  The perfect way to decompress after LA traffic, and celebrate National Sauvignon Blanc day, which yes, it's a thing.

Two bottles of The Crossing white wine
The perfect wine for summer entertaining, and just about $13/bottle.

Next, some knife skills pointers and we made an incredible green bean potato salad with rustic pesto dressing.  Super yum.

Seared scallops with a spiedini sauce over confetti rice with roasted fennel came next, which paired perfectly with the Sauvignon Blanc.   We talked shop, caught up on love lives and most importantly, discussed the holy grail of finding a comfortable, yet chic sandal for summer.  (Which I just ordered, and will be sharing deets soon).

I even got to embrace my inner Great British Baking show nerd by trying my hand at rolling the gluten-free walnut cake with berry whipped cream into a log- a delightful and delicious way to end the evening.

Cheers to more girls' nights out!!!

Big thanks to The Crossings for sponsoring our night!

Three women blowing kisses showing their lipstick color

I shared mine with Natalie and Allison, two friends I adore.  Natalie is the woman behind @goglobaljewelry on Instagram, she is a brand ambassador for Ash + Ames, a jewelry company that empowers women artisans around the world.  The jewelry is beautiful, original and does good by giving back to developing countries and allowing women to own their own businesses.  I'm a fan!

Allison and I have known each other for a lifetime.  We met while we training to be professional dancers and attending UCLA.  Most recently, she's been an integral part of the worldwide Broadway smash Wicked and continues to perform and travel the world with the show.  A talented, beautiful and hilarious gypsy to the core.

To share Freebie Friday goodies with your friends, like the pic on my Instagram, tag a friend, or many, and a winner will be picked at random on Monday.  Be sure you are following me to win.

Freebie Friday

Meet Dawn McCoy.  Blogger, influencer, actor, host, connector, creator of delicious lifestyle blog, Beauty Frosting and social media rock star.  When I met Dawn, I knew we were going to be friends, not in a stalker-y way (says me), but I could just tell she's my people.  I saw her speak, and ever since, she has inspired me daily to hustle more, ask for more, push more, connect more, and most importantly of all, give back more.  A woman who supports other women and lifts them up isn't the easiest thing to find in Hollywood, and Dawn's talents and drive are only surpassed by her generosity of heart.  I am so grateful to have her in my corner and thrilled that she's helping me #PracticeGenerosity and pay it forward this Freebie Friday!

We caught up this week over brunch for Purlisse's launch of their Blue Lotus collection, skincare that's free of parabens, petrochemicals, propylene glycol, synthetic color/fragrance, phthalates, and animal by-products, and is loaded with anti-oxidants, anti-agers and hydration.  I just tried the face mask and my skin is glowing!

This #FreebieFriday we are giving away a Purlisse gift set valued at over $300- including the Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum and Blue Lotus Brightening Serum! To enter, just like the picture on my Instagram, and tag a friend you'd like to share the prize with.  You can tag as many friends as you like, and be sure you are following me to win.   Paying it forward has never been easier!

Purlisse is a safe and natural skin care line started by my friend, Jennifer Yen.  As CEO and founder, her mission is all about creating pure beauty products using Asian skincare secrets, passed down from her Grandmother.  We met back in the day as 2 actors auditioning for commercials, and I am so thrilled to see how her company has grown and how truly wonderful the products are, especially for sensitive skin.  She is a fellow "mompreneur" and has built this company for the past 8 years!

Nothing I love more than a beauty-ful brunch with women who inspire!!!  Thank you Dawn, Jen and Purlisse!  Happy Freebie Friday everyone!
